Fear of rejection is what controls us all.

G’day, guys. It’s Den Lennie here, welcome to this episode of the How to Scale a Video Business podcast. First of all, my apologies for the lack of episode last week. Truth is we got back from the UK and I’ve had COVID about six weeks ago, got back from the UK and what combination of jet lag and some kind of chest infection I picked up on the plane. I literally couldn’t speak last week. And so I’m gonna keep this episode short as well, because I’m still not a hundred percent, but didn’t wanna kinda leave you guys in the dark. But today I wanna just reflect on some things that I picked up while I was away on my trip that I think will be really helpful for you.

So, Sam and I got back from the UK, like a week ago. It was great. We connected with family. We held our mastermind event, which I spoke about a few weeks ago, and as I’ve come back and, and had a week of sort of sickness and just recovery, I realized that, you know, whenever you go and do something, which is kind of exciting and disruptive in some, in really positive ways for your business, like, you know, you’re gonna weigh in you having some time out. And a lot of my clients had a few weeks off in July, and we were all talking about this, Nicole, the other day, how valuable it is to get away, but how it actually can really take about a week to get back into the flow once you’ve been away and it can feel quite sticky.

Den Lennie (1m 55s):
And sometimes we can give ourselves a hard time about not like firing on all cylinders. And I was talking to Sam about this, my wife, and we realized that, you know, there’s been a big lesson that I’ve learned recently, and that is the more you hang onto something. The stickier life becomes. And, and if you’re willing to let go of everything. And that means letting go of, you know, if someone, if a client stops being a client, for example, or someone doesn’t pay the bill on time or any number of, you know, things that could potentially trigger you in your business, I’ve learned that the more like relaxed you become all about all that stuff, the easier life becomes.

Den Lennie (2m 37s):
And so I guess that the lesson here is, is that you should, if you’re aligned and you’re doing something that you really enjoy and you simplify your life to the point where your focus is all on the client experience and making sure your clients are getting results, then actually everything becomes quite simple. And this might sound, sound like a very simplified process. But as I observe the clients in my programs who have the greatest results, they’re the ones who are very focused on client outcomes and very focused on making sure they’re doing stuff that they really enjoy.

Den Lennie (3m 18s):
So, you know, for example, if you are working across too many different niches, you’re trying to be all things to all people. We had this conversation on the coaching call yesterday in the VBA Elite. And it was that the more focus you put on really helping your clients achieve results, they’re much, it becomes much easier to, to, to deliver those results. And then the money comes on the back end. So let me give you an example. One client of mine is in the event space and he has been doing a lot of LinkedIn outreach.

Den Lennie (4m 1s):
In fact, we’ve been helping with our team’s helping our team, helps our clients with the LinkedIn outreach. And we’ve been doing outreach for him for about eight months now. And he hit a week where things were going a bit quiet. And so we jumped on my call and he’s like, oh, I’m not sure how to follow up with these leads. So we, we come up with a strategy and it’s very simple strategy of how to follow up with someone who you’re in conversation with and, and turn the conversation back into a sales conversation. So rather than just being, Hey, good to meet you, et cetera. How do you transition into that sales conversation? And so we used this, this strategy and Sammy reached out to a couple of dozen people and he booked five meetings.

Den Lennie (4m 43s):
Now, two or three people said, oh, Hey, I knew the sales pitch was coming. But the key here is to ignore that and ignore that sense of rejection. And instead focus on the five calls that are like, oh yeah, we’d love to talk. This is actually really helpful. Let’s jump on a call. And so the moral of the story is, if you are genuinely helping your clients and, and you, you have a, a service that is of, of high value, then you have a moral obligation to, to help people who don’t know about you to understand you, you are a solution that might be very helpful and useful to their business. And I think the obstacle for a lot of creatives is that feeling of, oh, I don’t wanna bug someone or I don’t wanna be rejected.

Den Lennie (5m 30s):
You know, we all live in fear of rejection. And I think that’s one of the biggest hurdles that, you know, we face as creators. And so one of the things I’m gonna be doing going forward and I’m building it at the moment is I wanna create a free group for listeners of this podcast. For those of you that perhaps aren’t quite ready for one of our paid programs, but have an interest in going beyond just listening to a podcast, we used to have a free group on Facebook, but I just really don’t like the Facebook platform. Just so you can take some of the principles. We talk about implement ’em in your own business and get some results. And then we’ll probably do a once a month kind of open session, like a surgery where we’ll do like an hour long live stream or something where you can, you can kind of pitch questions and then we’ll ask, answer the questions live within the group. So I’m hoping that’s gonna be something that’s gonna be of real value to you. We’re in the process of building it at the moment, and hopefully it’ll be ready in the next few weeks, but I’d love it.
