When you’re overwhelmed, it’s difficult to function. Listen in for some advice on how to deal with and reduce the sense of being overwhelmed.
Den Lennie (4s):
Hey guys, it’s Den here. Do you have a struggle with overwhelm with feeling like this is just so many things to do, and you don’t quite know where to start. You know, the update, your website, the update, your short reel. Do you, you know, make those sales calls and then we’ll leave them for later a cause of is not that really the fun stuff out. So today I want to share with you and this shorty that we have just been addressing this on our weekly coaching call. This is episode 203 of the How to Scale a Video Business podcast. And I’m hoping in the next set of 10 minutes or so, and I can give you some really useful strategies to help tackle overwhelm and get you focusing on the right things to get results for your business.
Den Lennie (47s):
So, you know, it’s very common to be overwhelmed when you’re building your business because they’re is just so many different things to focus on and it can be a little bit queer chaotic. And, and oftentimes if your not clear on what you’re top priorities are because of all the priorities feel that top priorities, right? And of course, you’re dealing with real life as well. You know, maybe you’ve got a son or daughter this off to college, and that’s the damn thing in the nest. And that’s that is leaving a satin, the emotional impact on you and your family. It could be any number of things going on, especially with all the craziness in the world. Just no, you know, there’s those people that are in a locked down and not, and lockdown people are going about the business.
Den Lennie (1m 31s):
Normally it can be quite a debilitating time, but what I wanted to focus on today was how to overcome, excuse me, those initial M challenges around overwhelm, excuse me, a second. We scrapped a quick drink. I always do these live. So getting out and, and no editing. So yeah. W what are some of the things that can create chaos? Well, you know, as creators, we are often very focused on what is our website look like now in France, for the best part that 10 years, I have a fairly ordinary booking website. We have just in the last year, spent quite a lot of money on new copy and you websites, and actually are on the show in Thursday, mostly the interviewing Jamie Murray from a savvy copy, who has a company, did all of the copywriting rewrite for us.
Den Lennie (2m 22s):
So you can tune in to that and then get the insights on a, on the, how is she transformed? What we hear. We were seeking to make it, you just send a laugh a lot better, but you know, that that was something we did after 12 years in business. It’s so what’s more important on your website is the messaging, making sure you’re talking to the right audience and a mistake. I see a lot of filmmakers make is that the try and target too many different businesses that may resist niching down or niching them when, you know, the there’s, there’s so much evidence of niching and your business’. So your niche, your marketing message.
Den Lennie (3m 3s):
So you can tailor and target your conversations too, in a specific sector, have the market, instead of trying to communicate with everyone and spread your message to thin and too wide M you wanna be, you know, accurately pin-pointing prospects and you’re market and, and not just kinda, you know, causing everything. So, one of the things that I suggest you do for helping overwhelm is, is write everything down. It can be as simple as just using post-it’s okay. Kept everything out of your head. When we carry a lot of information, run it in our head. We, we, we, we can very easily become overwhelmed because we, we just jumped from one thing that the next, and then you’ve got your e-mails, you got your social media to look at it.
Den Lennie (3m 50s):
And before you know, that you’re just like, not really getting any progress. So my suggestions are, and one of the, one of the chats on the call today is suggested using Trello, which was like, he digital whiteboard with post-it notes on it. A now there’s a lot of different types of these kind of programs, our own, but that Chris recommend the trial. And what you want to do is, is prioritize the different aspects of your business and the different aspects of what you need to be focusing on. And that can be very challenging. One of the huge advantages, and we have just had an amazing coaching call and with lots of great feedback about this very topic, which is that, you know, having a space to come in and share the frustrations that you might have enables you to feel comfortable and safe for others to say, well, actually, you know, we, we feel that too.
Den Lennie (4m 44s):
So here’s some suggestions and we had some great discussions on the call today about this. In fact, I’ve just got some feedback from a, from a new member, John. And he said to me, he said, I’m, there was a great session, very informative, open and honest. And so, thanks for that, Jon. I really appreciate that. And that is what we, that we do in the VBE. And there is a business group, and the focus is absolutely in building your business in making more cache, but we do in a very supportive environment where that is an open discussion about the challenges that we all face in life and how we’re trying to build the business in amongst them. So using a trial is one suggestion, or, or even just a post-it notes, and then prioritize, prioritize the, the most important aspects first.
Den Lennie (5m 30s):
And the easiest way to prioritize the most important aspects first is to always be focusing on revenue generation. If you spend an hour every day, focusing on revenue generation, and you reach out to enough people every single day, and you do that with intent, you will grow a business now by intent and stars mentioned this on the call today. He said, you know, the universe doesn’t operate in a vacuum. The more you go out to the universe, and the more that you share that you are open to supporting local businesses, you’re open to supporting people, to help them overcome their challenges with video, helping them communicate their message, letting people know that you are available and I’m willing to help in whatever capacity you can, that will generate opportunities.
Den Lennie (6m 24s):
So by putting yourself out there and actually making calls and that I realize can be very, very daunting for, for creative, but no, one of the things we do in the VBA is we make it easy. We it’s all about making the easy, because I built the VB based on my own experience of running a business. And so, are you not anything I asked people to do in the VBA? I’ve done myself and I know what it feels like to go. I’ve got a call somebody up, but that when you come out at with the right intent and by intent, I mean, just seeing something as simple as, Hey, I wanted to check up, how are you? You know, what’s been happening a lot of creative, just MOH. You know, some people who are in lock down here in Australia with that half the population is in lockdown.
Den Lennie (7m 4s):
And you know, how can I support you? W is there anything that I can do to help? And then new you, you can branch out and expand and be more, you know, start thinking laterally is like, how can we help our client base? And if you do that, you’re going to find yourself having really meaningful conversations. Now, even if it doesn’t tend to be worked out straight away, people remember when you’ve made that made the effort to go out and to, you know, to, to make, to make, to make connections, to be human too, you know, to, to, to help people get through a tough time. And you might think, well, this my video business, but that is, is it’s about, it’s about selling people to people.
Den Lennie (7m 45s):
So you want to be generating opportunities that that helped people out. And so I’m getting clear on everything, it’s on your plate. And in the other thing, I’d just leave you with this is start chunking daze into different themes, really grit to pull out from some of a few years ago, you know, a Monday make Monday, you’re a business development Dee pick Tuesday, your accounts that you make Wednesday, you’re a sales. Then you make Thursday, you our production, they make Friday you’re, you know, and then I’ll review them. This was always dependent on where you are at business. So it’s very difficult to give generic advice. But, but what I’d say is if you, if you focus on chunking your weeks into themes, and then, and then finally there’s a session.
Den Lennie (8m 31s):
Starz is like having our in your camera and say, right the next hour. So I’m just going to work on revenue generation. I want to call as many people up as I can for this hour. And I do this every day for an hour, and then that’s it done? And that will really help, but this, Hey guys, there’s so much more to this that we, that we get into in great detail inside the VBA. So if you are sitting on the fence thinking about whether or not it’s for you, then I’ll leave you with this to give you a bit more insight, ask yourself, this has owning your own video business, be in everything that you dreamed it would be when you first got started. It might be hard to admit, but think about whether you’re genuinely achieving everything that you set out to you. When you made that decision to grab the camera and go it alone.
Den Lennie (9m 13s):
Are you really working less our you really earning more and are you really in control? Chances are you’re bloody good at what you do, but your having to work a dog 70 plus hours a week, whether it’s filming, editing, marketing, or any of the other jobs that come with being the big boss of your in video company, when you’re managing projects constantly searching out for new clients and worrying about cashflow, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture or make real progress. Let’s face it. That stress is the last thing you need. When you’re trying to run a profitable company that supports you and the people you care about.
