Do you know why you’re doing what you’re doing? The power of purpose is similar to the energy of light magnified by a magnifying glass. The more control you have over who you work with, the more fulfilling your business life will be.

Den Lennie (0s):
G’day, guys! It’s Den Lennie here, host of the How to Scale a Video Business podcast with episode number 215. I’ve just come off a planning call with the VBA mastermind members. And I wanted to share a, a theme that came up today, which I think is really salient, especially with the lots of a disruption continuing in the world with various stages of lockdown and COVID restrictions, someplaces that completely back to normal. Our that was a completely locked down in. And so it’s giving people a chance to reflect on, you know, goals and perhaps financial and business goals that may have been affected by what’s going on in the world.
Den Lennie (57s):
And some of that became clear in, in our group today was a lot of very successful businesses, reflecting on readjusting, the goals, readjusting their Target’s of destination. If you like. And it’s something that we have at a cultural level in the VBA, which is, you know, our highest value is joy consciousness and fulfillment. So let me break that down. What I mean by that we’re all driven business qwners and, and, and making profits in the business is an important metric for growing a successful business.
Den Lennie (1m 38s):
But the why, why is a big topic of discussion? We’re very keen and clear on getting to choose who we work with. And that means only working with people who support your culture, support your vision and support your values. It’s, it’s critical that you don’t just work for anyone because you’ve got money you, or, you know, the more you can choose who you work with, the more satisfying your business life we’ll be. And I’ve got a client who’s a very, very successful who has just been reflecting on that recently.
Den Lennie (2m 21s):
And M he’s come up with a plan. And this was the th there’s a theme across all of our members actually today, which is not a surprise because we have an amazing culture inside. The VBA is like a family of like people are very open in, very willing to share what’s working. What’s not what achievements is. There are happening in the business and what lessons they are learning. And when you sit on a call and have 10 of 12 people share that and insight, it’s a very, very powerful and is very aligned to the business. I want to run the culture of the group is critical for me. I want it to a supportive, abundant, that environment, where when people are sharing openly once and all, and its very, very encouraging.
Den Lennie (3m 13s):
’cause, you know, there are a great group of people. And so today we were sharing, you know, what’s working now, what lessons have been the last month then? And what, and what achievements have been a happening? And you know, it’s, it’s, it’s really cool when you create something that begins to build a life of its own. I’m very, very proud of every single member. Is that, is it the VBA, both in a BBA and we have a foundation program as well. I have one that’s in that program has been hand-selected. They jumped through a number of hoops to get an opportunity to even join the program. And the reason for that is, is because we want to have the right culture.
Den Lennie (3m 54s):
We want a culture of growth. You want to culture have people helping each other, but also a culture of accountability account, a car countability yourself. We don’t spoon feed people. We create the right environment and we provide the right tools. Can we create a community to help people succeed? And so on, today’s call, you know, once a month we’d do a planning call and we review, you know, S the, the, the important metrics like revenue and profit and turnover and, and, and what marketing is working in. Are you getting enough opportunities in to your business and how we track all of those important metrics, but also we, we look to be sure that we’re maintaining alignment with a bigger vision.
Den Lennie (4m 41s):
’cause, you know, that anyone can, that make videos, you know, it is not inherently difficult to make a video, and there’s never been and more opportunity to work with great, talented people. In fact, one of our clients a day, or a job I had for over a, a remote out of town had 400 applications. So getting ahold of talented people is not the problem, differentiating yourself in the market and attracting like-minded prospects and customers. That’s where the focus should be. Because if you are walking with clients that you love helping, and you’re able to provide a really impactful service, one that genuinely supports the prospect’s needs and desires and helps them get what they want, then you’ll have an amazing business.
Den Lennie (5m 29s):
And if you then build a team and have incredible people who are empowered to make decisions, and then empowered to grow an, a given responsibility, and you’ll have an amazing team that will allow you to create more time. And when you get your business to a certain level, you’ll not want to do any more editing or your not once, not any more shooting in and you, but your take on more of a conductor role, the you’ll be orchestrating other people’s, you know, rules and, and encouraging them to build systems and, and, and, and automate elements of the process. So you’ll find yourself as the business owner having less and less to do, and that can create an opportunity which may be uncomfortable to, to explore what you do next.
Den Lennie (6m 22s):
And so you think about what would I want to do a year’s time or a five years’ time, or maybe even 10 years time, where do you want to be? Where do you want your business to take you? Because your business is simply an investment vehicle that you create. And when we, when we first start, right, we must have a started as a freelancer. So we start by doing the work ourselves. We shoot the project, we edit the project, we call a great, the project. We produce the direct, the projects, and what the problem with that it is you can only go so far are doing everything yourself and F and at some point you we’ll hit the ball, a bottleneck where you can only do so many projects.
Den Lennie (7m 3s):
And when you’re walking in one project, do you not able to do anything else? And so in the mastermind, have the VBA were generally working with the businesses who are looking to scale and therefore need to be thinking about taking, or even some part-time help or some offshore help. And from there the progress too, to kind of a fulfilling different roles in the business that will enable them to step back and be the kind of create a director are the CEO or whatever, or job title they wanna call themselves. And that, but mostly it means having a team of people and systems in place that allow you to step back from day-to-day operations and ultimately potentially have a revenue stream, an income stream that operates without you.
Den Lennie (7m 53s):
That means that you’re out running a figure of money every year, without having to do anything in the business. That is the Nirvana. And then you can choose to say to the board, or, you know, a travel, or do you explore something else that you wanna study or alarm. And so really what we’re doing is we’re building businesses that create more time and many of our members of young families, and they’re conscious of wanting to spend time with their kids growing up. And so I guess the, the, the, the moral of this story is what do you want your business to be? Where do you want your business to go? And if you been listening to this year for a while, and you are feeling like, is all getting on top of your that maybe, or maybe it’s 10 of a conversation and see if we are a good fit for you to help you achieve your goals.
Den Lennie (8m 44s):
Ask yourself this has owning your own video business and everything you dreamed. It would be when you first got started. It might be hard to admit, but think about whether you are genuinely achieving everything that you set out two when made that decision to grab the camera and go it alone, or are you really are working less R you really earning more up and are you really are in control. Chances are you’re bloody good at what you do, but your having to work like a dog 70 plus hours a week, whether it’s filming, editing, marketing, or any of these other jobs that come with being the big boss of your own video company, when your managing projects constantly searching out for new clients and worrying about cashflow, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture or make real progress.
Den Lennie (9m 27s):
Let’s face it. That stress is the last thing you need.
