Den Lennie (1s):
Good day, guys. It’s Den here, episode 23 of the, How to Scale a Video Business podcast. And today we’re talking about the importance of celebrating your wins along the way. It’s so important to take some profits as your business succeeds and what I mean by that, it’s very easy when you’re a freelancer to constantly be thinking about the feast and famine and having that money away available for a rainy day when things go quiet. But one of the best benefits of running a business is that that disappears.
Den Lennie (45s):
When you start to build a systemized business, one that has predictability, you’re going to start seeing profits. And you’re going to see yourself going from a position of debt to a position of clawing back to zero, to suddenly having money in the bank. And it’s very easy to try and hang on to that money and to be stressing about what if it all stops and that’s a perfectly normal reaction. However, if you follow the processes we share in the VBA and you systemize your business and you build predictability into your marketing and your sales process, and you’re tracking everything correctly, you have an incredible magnifying glass on what the future looks like.
Den Lennie (1m 33s):
And as long as you keep showing up, as long as you keep doing the things we suggest you will have predictability in your future and you’ll start to have extra money. And that is when things start to change. I want to share with you today is we came up an incredible call today talking about the subject, which is You have to take profits, You have to enjoy the fruits of your labor, and that means spending money on yourself and your family that isn’t directly related to building the business. It’s purely enjoying the fruits of your labor and opportunity.
Den Lennie (2m 12s):
And it’s something that is one of the treats in the thrills of running a business. If you decide to set up a business, then what you’re doing is you’re willing to do the work that not many people are willing to do. So you can enjoy benefits that most people would only dream of later on. And at some point in your business journey, it’s going to flip from feeling like you are having to scrape by, to suddenly having a bit of extra money. And it’s very important to take breaks and enjoy that. And it might just be grabbing a massage. It might be going out for a lovely dinner.
Den Lennie (2m 54s):
My wife and I, we’ve been talking for a long time about taking breaks every quarter, and we talk about it for years. And then a year goes by and we haven’t taken a holiday. And so recently we had our anniversary and we went down to the gold coast and we went down to the Versace hotel and had an amazing weekend in the Versace hotel to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. And let you know if we can’t celebrate that in style, then what’s the point. So we went down there, we went whale-watching, we went hot air ballooning. We even hired a rolls Royce Phantom for an hour and drank champagne whilst driving around the golf course. And it was a phenomenal experience.
Den Lennie (3m 37s):
And like I was saying to the guys on the call today, when we get to our deathbed, we’re not going to be sitting there thinking, I wish we’d done some more shoots. I wish we’d done some more edits. So we’d wish we’d worked longer in the office. What we are going to be thinking is thinking, hopefully, ah, God, I’m so glad to that rolls Royce journey, or I went and that helicopter or I took that trip away into the forest or into the ocean. It’s like, those are the memories that we create. And if we think about why we’re doing all of this it’s to create memories. It’s the anniversary of my dad’s death yesterday 15 years. He died at 67 from lung cancer and that was too young.
Den Lennie (4m 17s):
And so I made a decision when he passed that I was going to make my life count in a way that not saying he didn’t, he had an amazing family and amazing life, but it was cut short. He would have been 82 this year. He got taken from us at 67. So I make a point of enjoying everything at which is that the answer is always yes. If there’s an opportunity to create an experience, then I’ll always see, yes. Things are starting to open up here in Australia. I got an email yesterday, the brand new heavies are touring and they’re going to be in Sydney next year. I said to my wife, do you want to go? And she’s like, yeah, let’s go. So we’ll go fly down to Sydney, see a band for the night, and we’re going off to Cairns next week for three nights.
Den Lennie (5m 4s):
That’s about two and a half hours flight away. We’re going to go and take a trip that we’re supposed to take in August. And we’d only do that for three days. So we’re going to take a trip up to the Kuranda rail and have a day out there. And then we’ve got the barrier reef for a day. And then we’re probably gonna go out and abort and fly back in a helicopter because those are the things we love to do when we’re on holiday. And if we can’t enjoy those luxuries, then why are we doing this? And so as much as it is important to, to create stability in your business and create success, and once that’s in place, then it’s really important to treat yourself to things that fill you up, that light you up.
Den Lennie (5m 47s):
Because, if you think back, I’ve been running this business for 12 years. For nine of those years, I worked seven days a week, and now I only work three or four days a week. That’s because I’ve built a business and built a team around me that enabled me to do that. But it wasn’t always like that. I can now go away for weekends and do helicopter trips and do nice things and go for nice meals because that’s what I enjoy doing. So whatever you enjoy doing, make sure you know what that is. One of the first things we do inside of the VBA is, encourage people to do a vision board for what they want their life to look like.
Den Lennie (6m 30s):
Then you’re very clear on what you want your life to look like, then you can create a strategic plan to execute and deliver that. But the thing that’s probably the hardest thing to crack is that when you start to see success is how do you handle it? How do you still make sure that you’re being true to yourself, but also enjoying the fruits of your labor? It’s very easy to maintain that kind of like lack mindset of, oh, we don’t have enough, therefore, you know, best save, but there is a point in every business. And I say every business when it meets the tipping point where you suddenly start to have excess profits and you want to be taking those excess profits and spending some of them on yourself, it’s like self-care.
Den Lennie (7m 21s):
If you don’t celebrate in a material way, some of your successes, you won’t be in the right headspace to grow. And so I want you to think about if you had an amazing year and business going well, how do you celebrate your wins? And if you’re not at that stage yet, ask yourself why not? Because it’s absolutely possible. There’s so much workaround for video production companies. And if you do it right, you can do it at a really high level and earn great money, and have all the freedom that you ever wanted. So if you’re not yet at that stage, then reach out, have a chat.
Den Lennie (8m 2s):
Let’s see if we can help you. I’m not saying we can, we can’t help everyone. And not everyone is ready for us and we’re not actually right for everyone. But if you’ve been listening to the show for a while, ask yourself this question, what would be stopping you? What are you scared of having a chat? Because there’s every chance I can identify in 30 to 60 minutes, three or four areas in your business that I know we could help you scale. And, and wouldn’t you like to be in a position where you can just book a holiday for three months and not think twice about the things you had to do when you’re there. I can tell you. After 12 years of running a business, it’s a beautiful feeling to be able to do lovely things with your wife and not worry about how much it costs and that’s taken a long time, but it’s now sustainable.
Den Lennie (8m 50s):
And it’s scaleable and success should be celebrated. Most importantly celebrate by yourself. So guys, if you are having an amazing year, make sure you plan something fun to do with your family that celebrates all the sacrifices you make. Because when you run a business, you make a lot of sacrifices. However, the upside of that is that you are able to create a future for you and your family, that others can only dream of. Ask yourself this. Has owning your own video business, being everything you dreamed it would be when you first got started? It might be hard to admit, but think about whether you’re genuinely achieving everything you set out to.
Den Lennie (9m 32s):
When you made that decision to grab the camera and go it alone. Are you really working less? Are you really earning more? And are you really in control? Chances are you’re bloody good at what you do, but you’re having to work like a dog 70 plus hours a week, whether it’s filming, editing, marketing, or any of the other jobs that come with being the big boss of your own video company. When you’re managing projects constantly searching out for new clients and worrying about cash flow, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture or make real progress. Let’s face it. That stress is the last thing you need when you’re trying to run a profitable company that supports you and the people you care about. Truth is a business that provides financial professional and personal freedom really is achievable, but maybe you’ve got that nagging feeling that you’re overworked, lacking stability, and struggling to get to where you really want to be right now.
