When I talk about marketing to filmmakers, often people get very uncomfortable and start shifting around in their seats. And one of the reasons for that is that a lot of us hate the idea of being spammed. And we hate anything coming into our life in our inbox that annoys us.

And I think what happens is you have this mental block that says, Oh, I don’t want to start sending out marketing in case I annoy my clients. But here’s the thing. Most people don’t see every piece of marketing you put out. And if you do nothing, then you guarantee no results. Wayne Gretzky, the famous hockey player said, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

So in today’s clip, I’m going to share a clip from a coaching call where I talk about the specifics of marketing and how to overcome the fear of putting stuff out into your marketplace. One of the things that you’re going to have to get comfortable with is the discomfort of marketing. And overcoming that fear of, oh, I hate it when I get spammed, so I don’t want to spam other people.

That’s a classic one for email. We’ve tested this, because we’ve sent thousands of emails, and if you’ve been on my email list for a long time, you’ll know that. We haven’t done much recently, to be fair. We’re about to ramp up a bit more. Is that people only really see one in four or five emails that you send, because they end up in an inbox.

They might see them, they might not read them, might just see the headline. And If you send one email a month, that’s 12 emails a year, you’re lucky if your clients see that twice. If you send an email every two weeks, you’re increasing your opportunity quite substantially. If you send one every week, then you’re at 52 a year, and that means you’re going to get in front of people far more frequently.

Now, There’s no such thing as spamming someone. There’s only sending stuff that’s of no interest to them. And this comes back to the old idea of niche. If you market to everyone, then who are you talking to? It’s impossible to know. If you talk to a specific target market, then you know what’s going on in that market.

You can be posting content regularly on LinkedIn. You can be sending some emails out if you have an email list and you have permission. But really a lot of it is down to just. Connecting and building relationships. There isn’t really any shortcut to that. Yes, you can run eyes to a landing page and build an email list and nurture people that way.

But you’re not in the information space, you’re in the video production service space. And connecting with the right people, making sure they’re aware of what you offer. Making sure your profile on LinkedIn, making sure your website, making sure all your social profiles actually say the same thing is very important. So I hope you found that helpful.
